Black anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts the metal surface into a durable, high-performance aluminum oxide layer. This coating is permanently bonded to the surface, preventing peeling or chipping while offering exceptional hardness, corrosion resistance, and durability for demanding applications.
Custom black anodizing involves a precisely controlled oxidation process at low temperatures. The aluminum is immersed in an acid electrolyte bath with applied current to achieve the desired color, then sealed to protect the coating. This creates a surface more wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant than untreated aluminum.
For aluminum alloys 6061 and 7075, typical surface treatments include:
While aluminum naturally forms a thin oxide film in air that provides basic corrosion resistance, anodizing creates a much thicker, more durable protective layer through controlled electrochemical oxidation.
This surface treatment process electrolyzes non-ferrous metals (aluminum, magnesium, titanium) as anodes in acidic electrolyte to form dense oxide films that enhance corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and decorative properties.
The porous structure allows for color impregnation - black anodizing is achieved by filling these microscopic pores with black pigment, creating a permanent colored surface that lasts until the oxide layer wears away.
