Aluminum Pipe Welding Process
Aluminum Pipes: Ensure pipes are of the correct grade and size for your project. Thoroughly clean pipe ends to remove dirt, oil, grease, or oxide layers as even minor contaminants can affect weld quality.
Filler Metal: Select filler metal compatible with the aluminum alloy of the pipes. Common options are 4043 (silicon-aluminum) and 5356 (magnesium-aluminum). Filler diameter should match pipe thickness.
Shielding Gas: Argon (99.99% purity or higher) is recommended for shielding the molten weld pool from oxidation.
Required Tools
- Welding Machine: TIG (for precision) or MIG (for speed and thicker pipes)
- Cleaning Tools: Stainless-steel wire brushes, deburring tools, and solvents
- Cutting Tools: Saw with carbide-tipped blade or tube cutter for precise cuts
- Beveling: Required for pipes thicker than 3mm (30-45 degree angle)
Welding Techniques
TIG Welding: Set current (80-120 amps for 2mm pipe), voltage, and gas flow (10-20 L/min). Maintain 1-2mm electrode distance and feed filler at 15-20 degree angle.
MIG Welding: Adjust wire feed (5-8 m/min for 3mm pipe), voltage (18-22V), and gas flow (15-25 L/min). Maintain 6-10mm gun distance at 45-60 degree angle.
Post-Weld Treatment
- Inspect for defects (porosity, cracks)
- Clean with mild acid solution and water rinse
- Grind or polish for smooth finish if needed
